4176 - COLT SINGLE ACTION REVOLVER WITH DELUXE NEW YORK ENGRAVING.
Now here's a gun that we seldom handle for one reason and one reason only, and the reason is pretty simple. I don't like Colt Single-Actions that have been fiddled with. When I run across an engraved one, they've usually been worked over with polishing, buffing, and enhancing in an attempt to improve the over-all look, especially nickel plated guns that show original brown patina scattered about the plating due to natural aging. The whole point to providing a good product is to buy, and then offer for sale those products that are appealing to the eye of the collector. Since I am also a collector, it just stands to reason that if an item doesn't appeal to me, it won't appeal to my customers. This gun however, will practically bring a tear to the eye of the purist collector. It is absolutely untouched and it's a barn-burner of a Colt. This is an absolutely untouched, Nimschke style New York engraved gun with deluxe, C-grade engraving and spectacular pearl grips that haven't so much as a hairs-breath of a chip on them. It shows 98% frosty plating on the barrel, frame and straps and about 75% on the cylinder that has never, ever been polished. The coverage is outstanding on all surfaces and show the detailed trademark features of a Nimschke gun, not engraved by the master himself, but certainly a student of the style. The frame screws show traces of original blue and the strap screws have almost all of their fire finish. The gun comes directly from a family that finally wished to part with it and it has been with them since at least 1900. There's a monkey wrench associated with this gun. That is, it is in the 95XXX range and letters to the U. S. Government. The frame and cylinder have D.F.C. inspector initials and the gun matches with the exception of the barrel, which is un-numbered. I have forwarded photos and this information to some of the best Single Action men in the business, and consensus is that this gun is most likely made from a few rejected parts that were then re-assembled and shipped to a New York Dealer in 1883. Or, it could have been shipped back to the factory in the group of S/A's to be made into an Artillery Models and was assembled from extra parts and shipped to NYC. Had this gun lettered to New York, it would be valued at $22,000 - $27,000.00. It can be bought for half that amount. I guarantee its production to be from the period 1883 - 1898 manufacture, but the style of embellishment dates it to the earlier time period. This is an outstanding gun and would be a welcome addition to most any Colt Collection.

4174 - ANTIQUE SHARPS 4-BARREL PEPPERBOX DERRINGER, 22 CALIBER.
This is a good condition little 1A with excellent and early, gutta-percha grips. It retains no original finish to the metal parts but has a nice patina.

4173 - CIVIL WAR TIN-TYPE OF AN ARMED SOLDIER.
A Colt Dragoon Revolver tucked into his double-buckled belt is the highlight of this 6th-plate image of a Civil War Soldier. This is a nice, clear image is tagged by a former dealer as being pictured in the book, "More Confederate Images". It may be in the book, but I'm not so sure he's Confederate and think this assumption is based on the style of belt and the trim to his cuffs and collar. Although I can't be certain, the Revover looks like a Colt First Model Dragoon based on the early-style lever-latch and what may be a roumnd cylinder stop. The old price tag lists this image at $1550.00. Fat chance of that happening today.

4172 - FLINTLOCK SINGLE-SHOT PISTOL WITH BOX-LOCK FRAME AND MOUNTINGS FOR SPRING-LOADED BAYONET/KNIFE.
I'm still researching this one for a suitable price. It is in very good to fine condition with sharp edges and shows little use. The hammer will not stay on "cock". There are two holes tapped into the bottom of the barrel at the muzzle, one with a screw in it. This was obviously mounted with a bayonet at one time and removed. The gun is very dry and I may slap some oil to it and re-take the photos. If you have an interest in buying it now, please give me a call. It'll be reasonable.
Price coming soon.

4171 - HAWKEN PLAINS OR MOUNTAIN RIFLE. ORIGINAL, UNTOUCHED FULL-STOCK HAWKEN RIFLE.
This is one magnificent Collectors Rifle, and an example of one of the most famous of American Firearms. It is the nicest Hawken Rifle that I have ever owned and offered for sale. Untouched and 100% original with the exception of a repair to the face of the hammer, it is a full-stock Mountain Rifle made specifically for the heavy use of gaming Buffalo, large Bear and anyone that tried to inhibit the effort. This is not the usual half-stock Hawken that most of us are familiar with and see for sale at auction once or twice a year, but a massive full-stock of .56 caliber with a 36" barrel and 16 & 1/2" pull. When I laid eyes on it, I thought its weight would be much more than it was. The barrel, and even the stock itself is extremely thick but the larger bore size lightens the barrel considerably compared to others I have owned or handled and it is suprisingly easy to wield. The gun is nearly perfect in all respects showing little use. The condition of the wood is such that no one could ask or want of better condition, color or texture. All metal parts are an untouched patina and the form of the gun is perfect to include the Hawken trademark scrolls of the triggerguard which protect the double-sets and what I unconditionally guarantee is its original cleaning rod with bone tip. The boldly struck Hawken address dates this gun to the 1850's. As even non-collectors know, the Hawken Rifle is the most famous of all arms used by the great Mountain Men of our Western Frontier. They were manuifactured in the shop of Samuel and Jacob Hawken, who learned the craft of riflemaking from their father Christian Hawken of Maryland. An example of Christians work can be found in our Kentucky rifle section of this website. These guns became famous by being the rifle of choice by the likes of Joseph Meek, Jim Bridger, Kit Carson and others. The movie "Jeremiah Johnson" didn't hurt its reputation. Hands-down, one of my favorite items to ever be posted on this website.

4169 - COLT POWDER FLASK FOR THE EARLY 1851 NAVY REVOLVER.
This Colt Powder Flask is the early type, with curved bottom to the embossed stand-of-arms. You can note the difference in Rapley's book of Colt Accessories. The later flask has a straight bottom. Made for the earlier small-guard Navies, this flask is in excellent condition but lacks anything but the slightest traces of original lacquer finish, the balance aged to a beautiful, untouched patina. It would be perfect for display with a fine condition Navy Revolver.

4168 - ORIGINAL CIVIL WAR DRUM IDENTIFIED TO THE 10TH MASSACHUSETTS INFANTRY WITH BATTLE HONORS INSCRIBED ON THE UPPER HEAD.
This is an outstanding, historical artifact and especially rare for a drum. There are 2 types of Civil War Eagle Drums that I really take a liking to, excellent and/or identified. You'll find the best condition drum I've ever seen for sale later in this section. This one however, is of the identified type. This drum is in generally very good condition with an uncut body and original ropes, skins (bottom skin with a tear) and leather tugs (1 missing). It has a nice John Pollard label glued to the ID. The Federal Eagle painting is clear and weathered but retains the original painted riband bearing "10th Reg. Infantry". This is a drum that was there! A brass regimantal insignia "10" is affixed to the body in the diamond tack design. The upper painted rim has "10th Massachusetts" scratched into it which is probably the remnant of a fountain pen inscription. The best part of the drum is a series of original period ink inscriptions that encircle the top head-rim with battle honors to include Fair Oaks, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and Wilderness among others, all in period ink, original to the period and extremely faded. The drum as a whole is very presentable and rare. The 10th Mass. had a fantastic history to include the following service; Duty at Kalorama Heights and Camp Brightwood, Defenses of Washington, D.C., until March, 1862. Siege of Yorktown April 5-May 4. Battle of Fair Oaks, Seven Pines, May 31-June 1. Seven days before Richmond June 25-July 1. Oak Grove, near Seven Pines, June 25. White Oak Swamp June 30. Malvern Hill July 1. At Harrison's Landing until August 16. Battle of Antietam September 18. Battle of Fredericksburg, Va., December 12-15. "Mud March" January 20-24, 1863. Chancellorsville Campaign April 27-May 6. Operations at Franklin's Crossing April 29-May 2. Maryes Heights, Fredericksburg, May 3. Salem Heights May 3-4. Banks' Ford May 4. Franklin's Crossing June 6-7. Battle of Gettysburg, Pa., July 2-4. Bristoe Campaign October 9-22. Rappahannock Station November 7. Mine Run Campaign November 26-December 2. At Brandy Station until May 1, 1864. Rapidan Campaign May-June. Battles of the Wilderness May 5-7. Spottsylvania May 8-12. Spottsylvania C. H. May 12-21. Assault on the Salient at Spottsylvania C. H. May 12. North Anna River May 23-26. Line of the Pamunkey June 26-28. Totopotomoy May 28-31. Cold Harbor June 1-12. Before Petersburg June 17-19. Ordered home for muster out June 19. Mustered out July 6, 1864. The 10th lost during service 10 Officers and 124 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 1 Officer and 55 Enlisted men by disease. For years I've had customers calling in for identified drums and have only had two previously. For history, this is the best I've had. This won't last long guys.

4167 - ANTIQUE COLT 1860 ARMY REVOLVER.
This Civil War Colt Army is in the 140,XXX range and is in very good condition. Normally, I don't handle items that have been played around with, but this is an exception. It's a very crisp gun with good markings, edges and action and it retains about 80% original cylinder scene and full grips with cartouches. This gun definitely shows artificial aging to its surface. I would expect that the gun was found blotchy or rusty and then cleaned. It was then browned and actually shows some blue in protected areas as seen in the photos. Regardless, it's a very crispy gun and looks great and is an original Civil War issued Colt. Scrub off some of this browning and you'd have a real gem at this price. Or, you could leave it alone and it'll really look good in about 75 years!
