240 - ANTIQUE CIVIL WAR SWORD - FINE CONDITION, INSPECTED AMES ARTILLERY SABRE DATED 1865.
Contrary to the thinking of some Civil War buffs, there was still a Civil War being fought for much of the early part of 1865. Earlier dated items are surely more desireable, but some of these "orphans" of the class of '65 are also desireable when priced correctly. This sabre definately shows use, but is still in very fine condition. It retains all the leather & wire wrap, shows much polish on the blade and has an aged but dent-free scabbard.

136 - CONFEDERATE CIVIL WAR SWORDS - "WORLD-CLASS", REGULATION CONFEDERATE NAVAL OFFICERS SWORD WITH DOLPHIN HEAD POMMEL BY COURTNEY & TENNANT, CHARLESTON, S.C.
Simply spectacular condition, one of the best known examples of this type and certainly in the top 5% in terms of condition for ANY Confederate Sword, this beautifull dolphin-head is considered by many to be the most aesthetically pleasing of any Naval Sword ever created. The combination of WHITE sharkskin grip, large naval motif guard and distinctive dolphin-head pommel are striking, as are the coiled-snake mounts and drag. These wonderfull weapons, totally unique to the Confederate Navy were the result of efforts by George Tennant from the firm of Courtney & Tennant (Importers and Naval Outfitters) who went to England and contracted with Robert Mole and Sons of Birmingham, England to manufacture the famed and blockade-run Dolphins.
The guard on this example retains virtually 98 - 99% of its original gold gilt on the pommel and prox. 70% on the scabbard mounts. The leather scabbard (which often is not even present!) is in very fine to excellent condition for this model, with some flaking to the finish. The blade shows all of its original etch and frosting with only the most minor specs of corrossion scattered about its face. The ricasso is boldly stamped with the C & T address and the etching is deep and clear with a wonderfull Confederate 1st National Flag proudly etched among florals and Naval Motifs. Examples of the famed Dolphin Head are in the Smithsonian Institution and The Confederate Museum in Richmond. This particular example is one of the finest specimens ever offered for sale, and worthy of the finest museum or private collection.

146 - CONFEDERATE SWORDS - WORLD CLASS CONFEDERATE STATES ARMORY STAFF & FIELD OFFICERS SWORD MADE BY LOUIS D. FROELICH.
This example is one of the finest known to exist, retaining 95%+ original red paint on the scabbard and "zero" dents with some spots of corrossion and age showing. Typical cast brass guard is in absolutely excellent condition as is the grip which shows about 85% of the same original paint. The missing paint is from age and not wear. The blade is near mint. This is a museum quality specimen of one of the most desireable patterns of Confederate edged weapons with its huge CSA motif on the guard.

1025 - EXTREMELY RARE & ORIGINAL "POTTER" REVOLUTIONARY WAR HORSEMANS SABRE.
We're very pleased to be offering one of the rarest and most desirable items we have ever had the pleasure to find, an original Revolutionary War "Potter" Horseman's Sabre, one of only three known to exist with its complete leather scabbard. You can look at all the books and talk to all the collectors and so-called "experts" about Rev War edged weapons, but there is only one bonafide Rev- War sabre that we know was ordered by the Continental Congress and recorded as being there, and that is "The Potter". The Potter Horsemans Sabre is THE "Blue Chip" Revolutionary War Edged Weapon, much the same as Ames Swords are to the Civil War and Colt Single Actions are to the Western enthusiast. This may well be a once in a lifetime opportunity to own such a historic, museum quality item from the Revolutionary War. I was fortunate to have purchased this item from the late William Guthman through a mutual friend. Bill was best known nationally for his work on PBS's Antiques Roadshow, and this was one of many items featured on a TV program that highlighted some of Bill's collection last year. It was prized by Bill as it is by me, but I can't afford to keep everything I'd like to. If you would like the opportunity to own one of the best pieces of early American Weaponry ever offered, this may be the only one you'll get.
All three complete Potters are very similar in condition and all three are impressive with massive 35" long blades that are nearly 2" wide. The grip is 6 1/2" long!!! I have placed a Colt 5" Pocket revolver next to the sabre to help scale the size of the massive sabre. Several Potters were reproduced to scale and featured in the movie "The Patriot" starring Mel Gibson. Call for details.

med1 - SPECTACULAR, INSCRIBED AMES 1833 MEDICAL STAFF OFFICERS SWORD OF ARMY SURGEON, COL. ADAM L. McLAREN.
This is certainly the finest, and earliest Ames MSO sword in existance. It is inscribed to McLaren, who served in most conflicts from 1833 to the Indian Wars becoming the longest serving doctor in the U.S. Army. He served on Winfield Scotts Medical Staff in the Mexican War and was appointed in-charge of the field hospital at Castle Perote. He served out west in the Indian Wars, and was appointed President of the Medical Review Board during the Civil War, setting medical policy throughout. The condition is breathtaking, retaining virtually 100% of the brightest original Gold Gilt ever seen on a sword of its vintage. The blade is excellent. Together with all of McLarens' Medical Records and history.
