3347 - SWAN CONTRACT MUSKET FOR THE STATE OF VIRGINIA.
This extremely rare Virginia musket is one of 7,831 imported muskets delivered to VA by contractor James Swan of Boston during the period from 1797 to 1801, BEFORE there was a Virginia Manufactory producing arms for the state. This gun retains an extremely crisp "VC" marking in the wood, just behind the tang and the barrel is clearly marked 'Va REGt CUMBERLAND". These extremely rare muskets are basically copies of the British Brown Bess in form but not of the same high quality as they are thought to be Dutch in origin. This gun is virtually 100% complete save for a replaced hammer and missing ramrod, both of which could be easily replaced. Most of these guns were heavily used throughout the early 1800's with most of the balance being converted for Civil War use by Confederate Infantry and its almost a certainty that a few were used in their original configuration during the War for Southern Independence, possibly even this one. This is a unique opportunity to own one of the rarest American Martial Arms ever having being contracted for, issued and used by troops from the Great State of Virginia.

3338 - MODEL 1875 SPRINGFIELD OFFICERS TRAPDOOR RIFLE.
The Springfield Officers Rifles are of the most famous and desirable of all guns manufactured during the Indian Wars period. The Model 1873 Trapdoor Springfield was the first standard-issued breech-loading rifle adopted by the United States Army. In both full-length and carbine versions, the Trapdoor was widely used in the Black Hills War and in subsequent battles during the Indian Wars of the 1870's and 80's. The Springfield Officers Model is considered by collectors as the most beautiful product ever produced by the famed Springfield Armory and of over a half million guns produced, fewer than 500 were Officers Models. These rifles were not issued to officers but were available for special order to any U. S. Army Officer who desired to purchase one of these beautifully engraved specimens. This particular specimen is in excellent condition showing 99% original blue on its barrel showing very slight toning, 70% soft smokey case colors and near mint wood. It shows minor handling marks on the wood and metal surfaces but no field use and is generally in excellent condition. It shows the rare sight configurations of globe and peep front sight, standard rear sight and Creedmore style tang sight adjustable for windage and elevation. The Model 1875 is much more difficult to find in excellent condition than the later versions which are cartouched and dated 1881 or '85. These are most often found in great condition with brighter case colors. This is the earlier, harder to find model and would be a great gun for any antique gun collector and especially for those that specialize or desire examples from the Indian Wars period.

3263 - ANTIQUE RIFLE - HENRY RIFLE IN THE EARLY CIVIL WAR SERIAL RANGE.
This is an absolutely untouched Henry right out of a farmhouse in Burton, Ohio and it is very pretty. It had been in the same family since the late 1800's and probably earlier. This gun only has a few minor handling marks to its perch-bellied stock which retains all of its original finish. The frame is a deep and dark, nut-brown patina that shows minor nicks and some staining, probably due to powder residue that was never cleaned off. Its edges are still sharp. The barrel retains about 25% original blue mixing with deep, rich, plum-brown patina and the edges are sharp. Over-all, the gun is sharp and crisp to include all markings and the action. This gun has never been on the market before and is an early, perch-bellied gun in the 10XX range. It is untouched, never cleaned or enhanced in any way, shape or form. Straight out of a 3rd floor closet of an old farmhouse and in very, very fine condition.

S3261 - CIVIL WAR RIFLE - HISTORICALLY INSCRIBED AND PRESENTED SPRINGFIELD RIFLE.
Every so often, I find something particularly cool. This is one of those items, but I really don't know exactly its significance yet. This is a Model 1855 Springfield Rifle-musket dated 1859. The gun has been specially embellished with German-silver inlays about the fore-end and the lock, hammer and barrel are silver plated which is now turned blue! There is a huge, wonderfull coin-silver inlay inlayed into each side of the stock. One plaque is inscribed, "Prize Musket of the Jo Brown Guard, Reorganized May 1, 1872". The other is inscribed, "Presented to the Jo Brown Guards by Capt. Frank N. Hotchkiss". The date and presentation obviously refer to the Jo Brown Guard of Georgia that saw much service for the Confederacy during the Civil War. It was indeed re-organized in 1872 but there must be some more info out there somewhere concerning this rifle. I'd love to hear from anyone that may be able to shed some light on its presentation. If anyone wants to buy it in the meantime just give me a call. It's for sale at a reasonable price and I hope the undiscovered history of its presentation doubles its value for the buyer. I just need to move it.

S3215 - KENTUCKY LONG RIFLE BY J. H. JOHNSTON OF WAYNESBORO, PA.
I promise to buy a new camera next week and the main reason is my photos don't do justice to guns such as this. This is a simply outstanding Pennsylvania Long Rifle. It is in 44 caliber with a heavy 40&1/4" barrel. I can't describe what wonderful condition this gun is in, save to say that it is almost blemish-free. It shows an almost complete lack of small nicks, dings or scratches that show on even the finest condition guns. The wood is near flawless without a single crack. The barrel, with bold "J.H. Johnson" signature in script, retains about 30% original browning scattered its entire length. The brass mounts to include the patchbox are a fantastic nut-brown patina. It has 15 silver inlays about the gun that include 8 key escuchions and they are engraved so finely that they appear nearly "raised-carved", just fantastic work. In addition, the barrel is attached to the stock with a blind-pin system in that the pins do not come through the silver inlays on either side of the stock. It's simply exquisite work. The cheek-piece shows a fierce American Eagle clutching a shield and last but not least, a beautifull "streaking comet" motif is carved behind its cheek-piece. Now, we all know that this original percussion gun is not "Golden-Age", and we can debate that a good gun by this maker usually sells for less than I am asking. The fact remains that I have shown this gun to my little band of Kentucky lovers and they have seldom encountered such a gun at any shows or collections in the past and agree that this is the finest of its type they have ever seen. They told me I should just take it to a good rifle show and an educated buyer would scarf it up in the first hour. If you like great Percussion Rifles or are contemplating buying your first, give me a call on this gun. It is one of the few that I would bother to take extra photos of to display how truly beautiful it is. It was formerly in the collection of Gerald C. Stowe, former curator West Point Museum in the 1950's. He obviously recognized a great gun when he saw one.

2086 - FIRST-MODEL 1873 WINCHESTER RIFLE. EARLY PRODUCTION WITH THUMB-PIECE DUST COVER AND OUTRAGIOUSLY EMBELLISHED WOOD, MOTHER-OF-PEARL, BRASS AND COPPER INLAYS.
I don't know who did the decorative treatments on this gun, but it is awesome and of the period. I believe this to have been made as a presentation gift to an American Indian or possibly to a member of a Wild West Show. I have never, in 30 years of collecting seen anything quite like it and I guarantee that the work is period. The work is virtually perfect and done "back in-the-day". The gun is crisp as new with a perfect mirror bore and shows little use. The blue has somehow been removed without the slightest hint of sanding or polishing but shows blue on the interior so it didn't leave the factory in the bright. Someone fashioned the gun for it to appear as it does, bright, colorful and beautiful. Really an unusual Winchester that someone was very proud to carry.

1141 - 1863 SHARPS CIVIL WAR CARBINE.
This is a very nice and very crisp Sharps Carbine with patchbox. It shows a gray patina overall and is in fine shape to include very fine wood with inspector cartouches. It has never been abused and comes right out of an old collection where it was buried for years. A fresh gun to the market.

1132 - 1851 SHARPS CARBINE.
I won't tout this gun for its condition (which is actually above average for this model). I'll just say that it is a really smooth and unabused example of an 1851 Sharps carbine and they are very difficult to find in this condition. It has a few problems such as a missing sling-bar and a hole that was bored through its stock near the butt-plate. The hole was probably put there early on, as the earlier sling-bars were a bit frail and the hole sufficed as a location for a lanyard. It is plugged with putty or other filler and could be properly repaired by a gun wood restorer. Other than these two problems, this is at very least a very presentable example of a rare gun that someone might use to plug a hole in their Sharps Collection.

1108 - FLINTLOCK KENTUCKY RIFLE BY ADAM ANGSTADT.
This is a fine rifle by Angstadt with beautiful carving about the wrist and in front and back of the cheekpiece. Delicate c-scroll engraving adorns the un-pierced patchbox. The original lock has been re-converted to flint. The wood is a gorgeous tiger-striped maple. The last 10 inches of the fore-end have a v-shaped repair that is virtually imperceptible to the naked eye except upon inspection from the inside, under the barrel. This work was obviously done by a master restoration artist. It is virtually "a perfect repair". The gun is prox. 58" overall and shows classically the form of a Roman-nosed stock that is most desirable in a fine "Golden Age" Kentucky Rifle. See additional photos below !

1103 - 1873 WINCHESTER SADDLE-RING CARBINE, FIRST MODEL WITH THUMBPRINT DUST COVER.
This is a beautiful, untouched carbine that came to us with a group of several other guns. If you can't afford a mint one in the $30,000.00 range, this might be worth a look-see. It is the type of gun that we collectors hope to find, but seldom do. It is just s-o-o-o untouched. It has excellent condition metal and wood and just shows minimal carry and lots of toned original finish. I have taken close-ups of the frame with both light and dark backgrounds so you can get a feel of its true appearance. In some light it looks like 70% blue and in other light, 20%. The color is actually a blend of bright blue, toning plumb blue, and plumb brown. It is all blending evenly on both side, top and bottom. The barrel and tube are quite similar in appearance to the frame. When I inspect guns with this type of finish, they always have nicks and dings and dents from use over the years. This gun doesn't have the usual carry marks. Hard to believe that a Winchester can survive like this but the proof is in your hands when you're holding it. I am selling this gun on consignment for the owner who wants someone to enjoy it. He doesn't want it overpriced but wants a fair return on his investment as it goes on down the road. We will determine the sale price together in the next few days.

1079 - ANTIQUE HENRY RIFLE IN THE 9,000 SERIAL RANGE.
This is a very nice Henry and priced to sell. I doubt you'll find a better one cheaper. Starting from the front, the barrel is a smooth plum-brown patina with the slightest traces of actual blue in the magazine flutes and protected areas. I mean baby-butt smooth and untouched, a near perfect patina. The frame and butt-plate have a wonderful patina and show minimal dings and dents that one would expect from a gun that was used. The wood is beautiful and untouched, perfect fit and pronounced Henry "Bump". Action edges and markings are extremely fine. The brass follower and lever screw are old replacements, possibly of the period. This is a very good to fine condition Henry that other dealers would ask $30,000 or more for. We bought this in a group of items and have priced it with a reasonable mark-up as a group, not to try and squeeze the last dime out of each individual piece. You can find examples of that on other websites all over the net where the items never sell. I guess we're rebels, but, it works for us!

1024 - CIVIL WAR HENRY RIFLE WITH SHOULDER STRAP.
I'm afraid I'm going to have to invest in a better quality camera as I was unable to take a photo that could show exactly how nice this Henry is. It retains 50 - 60% untouched factory blue mixing with a deep, rich patina on the barrel. You can see the blue in the magazine channel, but blue is also scattered all about the remaining barrel flats as well. The edges and markings on the barrel are excellent as is the wood with pronounced Henry "Bump". This gun had been stored for years in the office of a machine shop and the frame had thick areas of dried out grease mixed with metal fines when I found it. I gently de-greased this to avoid scratching of the brass to reveal a fine, mustard colored patina. It does have a few scratches where someone attempted to remove the side-plates during its period of use, but not to detract from its excellent look. This is an outstanding Henry in the 8,000 serial range that is consecutive to a recorded martial and would probably fetch $50,000.00 or more at auction plus a buyers premium on top of that! This gun is available at a much more reasonable price right now. It's the best we've had in some time.

436 - WINCHESTER 1873 RIFLE, FACTORY ENGRAVED WITH DELUXE FEATURES.
This is a great Winchester at a very reasonable price. You probably can't get into a gun like this any cheaper. It is accompanied by an original factory stock record from The Buffalo Bill Historical Center, which houses all the old Winchester ledgers. The letter is from 1978 and states that this gun, serial number 22XXXX is 44 caliber, octagon barrel, plain trigger, checkered stock, pistol grip, gold-plated trims, $10.00 engraving (probably Ulrich), and under remarks is marked "bal-nic". This gun shows beautifull, near perfect, deluxe walnut stock, traces of silver to the barrel, loading gate, trigger and hammer, and a trace of gold over the silver on the loading gate. The frame was probably nickle but is now an untouched grey patina. The engraving is sharp and crisp and has a finely carved bear on the left side of the frame and a dogs head on the right. The engraving is still bold, as are the marking, edges and action. This gun was used, but not abused and is definitely a bargain for the buyer.

It has little specks of raised corrosion that could be cleaned off. The frame is near perfect with a beautifull, mellowed aged nut-shell patina. The wood retains all of its varnish and shows numerous scratches and handling marks but is still beautifull and striking. Henry's and Volcanics are going thru the roof. This is a great little untouched gun priced under what you would normally find one for in this condition.
